How to Varromed

I started beekeeping in 2016. I was always uncomfortable with using varroacides and was introduced to VarroMed by my bee group. I love that it’s safe and really effective, it’s harmless to my bees and keeps them healthy and happy.
Happy bees, happy life
I've switched to using VarroMed exclusively, and it's been a time-saver. It's very easy to apply, and I don't need any other treatments. My hives are in good shape, and I can focus on other tasks.
I've been using VM as only treatment for several years now. It's possible, but you really have to follow your hives very closely and keep mite pressure low throughout the year.

When should I use VarroMed?

  • Spring: Apply 1-3 times to disrupt mite growth early in the season, ensuring a healthy buildup of the colony.
  • Late Summer/Fall: Apply 3-5 times to counteract mite population increases after honey harvest, preparing the colony for winter.
  • Winter: Apply once during broodless periods to eliminate remaining mites and give the colony a strong start in the spring.

How much should I use for my colony?

The dosage of VarroMed depends on the application season and the severity of the mite infestation:

  • Spring: Apply between 15 to 45 ml per colony, with 1-3 applications.
  • Late Summer/Fall: Apply between 15 to 45 ml per colony, with 3-5 applications.
  • Winter: Apply 15 to 45 ml per colony, with 1 application.

Is VarroMed damaging for queens or brood?

No negative effects on queens or brood have been observed.

What is the maximum number of treatments that can be carried out in succession if there is ahigh mite load?

In relation to the market authorisations, 9 treatments are recommended per year. For the late summer/autumn treatment, between 3 and 5 treatments depending on the number of mites fallen.

Can I treat in the morning and/or during the day? Can I treat during the honey harvest?

According to the marketing authorisations and the tests carried out, it is recommended to treat at the end of the day when most of the worker bees have rejoined the hive.

Except in winter (when you treat at the warmest time of the day). (With Supers on the hives)

Is there any residue in the honey after treatment?

No MRL (maximum residue level) are required for VarroMed, which has a marketing
authorisation for Europe. There is a zero day waiting period for honey. However, it is advised to treat out of the honey flow period.

Can VM be used as the unique treatment (effectiveness)?

VarroMed is a treatment that can be used in all three seasons to keep varroa pressure low
throughout the year. By following the recommendations for VarroMed throughout the beekeeping year, it is possible to use it as a unique treatment.
